18U Shooting Stars

The 18U Shooting Stars Gold placed third this weekend at the 25 team ASA 18U Class A Virginia State Tournament held in Salem, Virginia. This tournament attracts the best teams in Virginia as a berth to the 2016 ASA/USA Nationals Championship is on the line for the top finishers.

The Shooting Stars came out of Friday’s pool play 2-0 and a number 1 seed going into bracket play with 4-1 win over TEAMS Elite and a 3-2 win over The Virginia Edge. Saturday’s bracket play opened with a 10-3, victory over STIX Fastpitch and a 2-0 Loss to the two time VA State Champion and third place finisher at the 2015 USA/ASA Nationals Hanover Hornets. This placed the Shooting Stars in the Losers Bracket and put the team in a lose and go home situation. The Stars responded with a 6-0 victory over The Virginia Edge 18’s. This win insured the Stars a spot to play on Sunday. At this point all but 6 teams had been eliminated but left the Stars needing six back to back wins to win the tournament.

On Sunday the Stars opened with 8:00 am game against the Fauquier Freeze and advanced with a 2-0 win. Next up was the regional team Sarasota Heat and All State Pitcher Bekah Ansbro. The Stars once again squeaked out 2-1 victory. Now on their third game in row the Stars battled another regional team the Lady Lightning which has seven girls committed to play in college including Duke, Saint Bonaventure and College of Charleston. The Stars handled the Lady Lighting 2-0 earning them a spot in the Losers Bracket finals against the Hanover Hornets the same team that sent the Shooting Stars to the Loser’s Bracket. In the Stars forth game in a row on Sunday the Shooting Stars ran out of gas and fell 6-0 to the Hornets.

The Shooting Stars pitching was nothing less that great only allowing 11 earned runs in over 55 innings spanning 9 games. The Shooting Stars bats were hot as well amassing 62 hits and scoring 29 runs over the same 9 games. The Shooting Stars defense carried the team with only 3 errors in 184 total chance over 9 games. The Shooting Stars parents and coaches could not be more proud of this team who fought toe to toe with the biggest and best fastpitch teams in Virginia and finished third out of twenty-five.
